Orange and Blue (Fire and Water)

Fire and Water

Oil on Canvas
100cm x 68cm

The contrasting colors of orange and blue take on traits of warmth and coolness. The orange with hints of black takes on a fire-like appearance while the blue with white resembles water or ice.

Argument

Argument

Oil on Canvas
158cm x 100cm

Here we can see the faces of two people, painted in contrasting colors of red and green and facing away from each other. The lines dividing them are in an asymmetric diagonal zigzag pattern symbolizing a tear as well as sharp points or teeth aimed toward each other. This was inspired by a feud in my own family that was not reconciled until one of the people involved was on their deathbed. It’s a reminder to myself and others of the futility of holding grudges.

Naked

Naked

Oil on Canvas
158cm x 100cm

This is a self-portrait broken into four layers; skin, muscle, bone, and nerves. This represents the layers of our own personalities and our true self being deeper than what  we post online or show to the world. Those who we know and trust the most see our deeper truer self, but there are even some things that we keep only for ourselves.

Connected

Connected

Oil on Canvas
100cm x 100cm

This piece examines our relationship with our phones and their increasing necessity in our daily live. Some say this is humanity’s next leap in evolution; our increasing integration of our bodies with technology.

Idols

Idols

Mixed Media
100cm x 68cm

Idols can be defined as something we revere and respect to the point of deification. Everything from super famous people, to objects we love and cherish, to actual holy relics from various religions can be given this title.

Pharaoh

Pharaoh

Oil on Canvas
100cm x 68cm

The gold a blue motif are reminiscent of the famous Gold Mask of Tutankhamen. The torn face of the man represents the fall of an ancient culture and the looting of the burial grounds of its kings. It also draws a line between this idea and the modern era plight of the African continent with its history of abuse by foreign powers.

Split Scene

Split Scene

Oil on Canvas
50cm x 100cm

This painting was from a photo I had taken on Vancouver Island in Canada while looking across the ocean at the mountains of Washington State in the USA. Both countries are so similar and yet have their subtle differences. I’m using different texture and thickness of paint to represent this idea.

No Evil

No Evil

Oil on Canvas
50cm x 100cm

The classic Japanese pictorial maxim of the three wise monkeys is well known and seen all over Asia and the rest of the world. The saying goes “speak no evil, see no evil, hear no evil.” This is a modern retelling of the same idea using objects of technology that we use for these same things.
